Smith.ai's AI Receptionist starts free with 25 calls a month, then $150 a month for 75 calls on Pro, and its live Virtual Receptionists start at $300 a month for 30 calls, based on Smith.ai's pricing pages I checked on October 20, 2026. Both bill per call, not per minute, and known spam doesn't count.

Every live plan includes a 30-day money-back guarantee, up to $1,000, "No setup fees," "No charge for spam," no overseas agents, 24/7 live staff, and lead screening, qualification and intake. The first CRM integration, new-client intake (5 questions) and a dedicated local or toll-free number (or porting yours) are free. Smith.ai lists a "10% discount for a 12-month subscription." After you cancel, Smith.ai may let you keep the assigned number as a working line for $10 a month, at its discretion (Terms).
How Smith.ai counts calls
What counts as a call
Per the Terms, a call counts when it's an incoming call to your Smith.ai number that you'd want answered (potential clients, family and so on) or an outbound call Smith.ai makes at your request. Telemarketers, misdials, promotional companies and callers who don't want to leave a message aren't counted. Blocking valid calls to avoid charges counts as abuse and can get charges reversed and the account cancelled. Overage is billed at the rates on the pricing pages.
Spam calls
AI plans: calls from 20M+ known spammers are filtered before answering and don't count. Other answered calls do count, but you can remove up to 10% of calls each billing cycle as spam. Live plans: "as long as the lines you forward to us pass Caller ID, you won't be charged for spam or unsolicited sales calls."
Free plan rules
The 25 Free Calls reset on your sign-up anniversary each month. They don't roll over, have no cash value and can't be transferred. After that, each call is charged to a prepaid Account Wallet, with optional Auto-Reload. Before answering a chargeable call, Smith.ai checks the wallet; if the balance would drop below the per-call floor, the "Balance Gate" redirects the call to voicemail or a message. Calls aren't cut off mid-call. Free Calls and Promotional Credits are lost if you cancel, and Smith.ai promises at least 30 days' notice of material Free Plan changes.
Contracts, cancellation and refunds
- Contract: month-to-month.
- Cancellation: 30 days' notice, per the Terms (cancel 30 days before the cycle ends, or the next month is billed too). The AI pricing FAQ also says 30 days' notice.
- Refund (live plans): 30-day money-back guarantee, up to $1,000. Outside it, payments are non-refundable.
- Plan changes: email support@smith.ai; changes take effect the next month.
- Setup fees: the live plans say "No setup fees." No setup fee is listed on the AI pricing page.
Smith.ai AI vs live receptionists: which fits?
This comes down to volume and how much you need a person on the line. Per call, the AI plans cost less at every published tier I checked: included calls work out to $1.60 to $2.00 on paid AI plans versus $7.00 to $10.00 on live plans, and extra calls cost $2.10 to $3.00 versus $8.50 to $11.50. At 75 calls a month, for example, AI Pro is $150, while live Starter is $300 for 30 calls plus 45 extra calls at $11.50, or $817.50. The live plans make sense if you want a human on every call or need one of the live-plan add-ons, such as a dedicated Spanish line, conflict checks or extended intake. The AI plans still hand off calls they can't handle to live receptionists.
